Counseling Information

The Austin High School Counseling Department is structured to serve students and families by dividing caseloads according to students last name. Counselors will remain with students for their entire high school career (9-12th grade).

Mission Statement

All students at Austin High School will be provided the opportunity to continue their challenging education journey in a safe learning environment. Students will be encouraged to view education as a continuing process toward expertise in professional, work, and social skills and to develop their individual talents and abilities to their fullest potential. The staff at Austin High School will work with parents and the larger Austin community to provide the resources necessary to enable students to be the best that they can be.

Our intention is to build confident, responsible, lifelong learners working towards Academic, Social, Emotional and Post-Secondary Career Readiness success.

October is College Knowledge Month.

FAFSA Workshops / Help Sessions

FAFSA Help Sessions, as part of Minnesota College Goal, will be offered in Room 151 of Austin High School at various times TBD.

Austin High School, with the support of Riverland Community College, will be offering workshops on completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) starting in October. These are free of charge and will offer an opportunity to gain helpful insight into filling out the FAFSA as well as ask questions.

There will be after school sessions (Dates TBD)

College Fair

In place of the MN Education College Fairs, there will be virtual college exploration sessions, including a variety of college panels (each panel is a minimum of three different colleges) and college info sessions (one college per info session). StriveScan will host virtual college exploration opportunities for students this fall. There will be three weeks of programming, beginning Monday, September 28 and ending Wednesday, October 14:

  • 45-minute sessions, Monday - Fridays the first two weeks, Monday - Wednesday the third week
  • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday sessions: 2:00 - 8:00 pm; Tuesday sessions: 11:00 am - 4:00 pm; Friday sessions 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
  • Each session begins at the top of the hour. All sessions will be recorded and available on the MACAC website for student viewing through the fall semester.
  • Week 1: College/Career Knowledge and Affinity Group Panels
  • Weeks 2 & 3: Individual Institutional Presentations

Virtual Financial Aid Informational Session - Wednesday, October 7, 2020

Please view the Financial Aid Informational Session from October 7, 2020. It contains important information about the financial aid process, FAFSA application and various scholarship opportunities. All presenters (see below) are available to assist with applying for FAFSA, or with any scholarship questions or concerns.

Mayo Health Care Career Festival - Date TBD

The Mayo Health Care Career Festival takes place in Rochester for interested 10th - 12th grade students. Interested students should see Ms. Mayers in the College & Career Center, room 151, to register for this event. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. PSAT - Wednesday, October 14, 2020

On Wednesday, October 14, 2020, the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) will be administered to interested Sophomores and Juniors. The PSAT/NMQST is the only test that the Hormel Foods Corporation will accept for their scholarship program. These scholarships are available to the children of current, retired, or deceased employees of Hormel and its subsidiaries. In no instance will any officer or employee of the Hormel Company play a part in the selection of scholarship winners or monies to be awarded. The NMSQT Corporation handles the entire award process.

ACCUPLACER

ACCUPLACER testing for qualified 10th and 11th grade students to determine PSEO eligibility/placement will take place from November through February. Upcoming Accuplacer Test Dates TBD. See Career Center for more information.

February 3rd, 2021 - PSEO Informational Session - AHS Knowlton Auditorium - 6pm

Riverland Community College will provide valuable information about understanding and making decisions about the Post-Secondary Education Option (PSEO), including understanding the differences between concurrent classes held onsite and classes at the college.

Junior Student and Parent Night - Wednesday, April 7th, 2021

On Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. in Knowlton Auditorium, please plan to attend this informational session about details for the remainder of your student's Junior year and what to expect as they head into their Senior year. Topics include details regarding the college application process, scholarships, FAFSA, transcripts and ACT. We will host a guest speaker from Riverland Community College to walk us through the process. The program will last approximately 1 hour.

ACT - April 27-29, 2021

Austin High School will be administering the ACT to all juniors on April 27-29, 2021. Registration will take place at school during social studies classes in April. 11th Grade PSEO students should stop into the counseling office in April to fill out the Pre-ID Information for the ACT.

Riverland Career Exploration Days - Spring 2021

Juniors will have an opportunity attend Riverland Community College's Career Exploration Day. This is an interactive and engaging event to explore possible careers.
