The Austin High School Counseling Department is structured to serve students and families by dividing caseloads according to students last name. Counselors will remain with students for their entire high school career (9-12th grade).

Mission Statement

All students at Austin High School will be provided the opportunity to continue their challenging education journey in a safe learning environment. Students will be encouraged to view education as a continuing process toward expertise in professional, work, and social skills and to develop their individual talents and abilities to their fullest potential. The staff at Austin High School will work with parents and the larger Austin community to provide the resources necessary to enable students to be the best that they can be.

Our intention is to build confident, responsible, lifelong learners working towards Academic, Social, Emotional and Post-Secondary Career Readiness success.

FAFSA Workshops / Help Sessions

FAFSA Help Sessions, as part of Minnesota College Goal, will be offered in Room 151 of Austin High School at various times TBD.

Austin High School, with the support of Riverland Community College, will be offering workshops on completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) starting in October. These are free of charge and will offer an opportunity to gain helpful insight into filling out the FAFSA as well as ask questions.

College Fair

MACAC is pleased to offer a Virtual College Exploration program for Minnesota students on October 5th - 7th. Registration opens on September 8th. Students, parents and counselors are welcome to participate for free. Register at  Students will choose from 20 panels on topics like paying for college, financial aid, application essays, internships and more! Additionally, there will be information sessions from more than 100 colleges located all over the country. 

Virtual Financial Aid Informational Session - Wednesday, October 6, 2021

A representative from Riverland Community College will be joining Austin High School to share information about post-secondary financial aid and resources.  This session is scheduled for Wednesday, October 6th at 6:00 p.m. This will be a virtual meeting and will be recorded.

Mayo Health Care Career Festival - Date TBD

The Mayo Health Care Career Festival takes place in Rochester for interested 10th - 12th grade students. Interested students should see Ms. Mayers in the College & Career Center, room 151, to register for this event. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. PSAT - Wednesday, October 13, 2021

On Wednesday, October 13, the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) will be administered to interested Sophomores and Juniors. The PSAT/NMQST is the only test that the Hormel Foods Corporation will accept for their scholarship program.  These scholarships are available to the children of current, retired, or deceased employees of Hormel and its subsidiaries.  In no instance will any officer or employee of the Hormel Company play a part in the selection of scholarship winners or monies to be awarded.  The NMSQT Corporation handles the entire award process. Sign up will take place starting October 1st through the cashier’s office.  Cost is $21. ($22 after October 12th) The test will start at 8:30am sharp in Ove Berven gym.

ACCUPLACER testing for qualified 10th and 11th grade students to determine PSEO eligibility/placement will take place from November through February. Upcoming Accuplacer Test Dates TBD. See Career Center for more information.

PSEO Informational Session - Wednesday, February 2, 2022 - 6pm

A counselor from Riverland Community College will provide valuable information about understanding and making decisions about the Post-Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO), including understanding the differences between concurrent classes held onsite and classes at the college. This will be a virtual meeting and will be recorded.

PSEO Informational Meeting - February 2, 2022

Junior Student and Parent Night - Wednesday, April 6th, 2022 - 6pm

Please plan to attend this informational session about details for the remainder of your student's Junior year and what to expect as they head into their Senior year.  Topics include details regarding the college application process, scholarships, FAFSA, transcripts and ACT.  We will host a guest speaker to walk us through the process.  The program will last 1 hour and will be a virtual meeting. The meeting will be recorded.

ACT - April 2022 - Dates TBD

Austin High School will be administering the ACT to all juniors in April 2022. Registration will take place at school during social studies classes in April. 11th Grade PSEO students should stop into the counseling office in April to fill out the Pre-ID Information for the ACT.

Riverland Career Exploration Days - Spring 2022

Juniors will have an opportunity attend Riverland Community College's Career Exploration Day. This is an interactive and engaging event to explore possible careers.
